US kiosk maker NCR reports better results than expected
NCR Corp., which makes automated teller machines and DVD rental kiosks including 10,000 for Blockbuster Express this year, reported a net loss of $56 million in the fourth quarter ending Dec. 31 compared to net income of $55 million in the same period in 2008.
Sales were down year-on-year by 5% to $1.35 billion in the period but the results were ahead of analysts’ expectations. The firm, which moved its headquarters from Ohio to Georgia and is focused increasingly on its new entertainment division, forecast a 2%-5% increase in revenue in this year.
CEO Bill Nuti told investors, “The DVD kiosk market is a large and rapidly developing market opportunity where our size, retail relationships and technology leadership position us to be the global market leader for years to come.”
NCR acquired DVDPlay, which runs about 1,300 kiosks in the US and Canada, and during the fourth quarter with MOD Systems began a trial that lets consumers download a film rapidly to a secure digital memory card for viewing at home. It aims to make the technology available in all its kiosks.
